A GENTLEMAN PUBLISHER'S COMMONPLACE BOOK By John Murray Featuring: Eric Ravilious, Edward Bawden, Edward Ardizzone, John Piper, Arthur Rackham and many others Jock Murray was a publisher and his commonplace book became legendary in his lifetime. Whenever he came across something wise, thoughtful, inspiring, witty or simply odd, he would write it into a tiny blue notebook he kept in his inside jacket pocket and then, when he had time, decant it into the commonplace book proper. Most of these have never been published before. "This book is intended to give pleasure to all those who dip into it, and if a little wisdom rubs off, so much the better". At the top is seen Edward Bawden's design used on the dustjacket, followed by two Eric Ravilious wood engravings. Below that are illustrations by Edward Ardizzone, Arthur Rackham, some wood engravings by Reynolds Stone and then Kathleen Hale's drawing of 'Orlando in Heaven '. The drawing of John Piper is by Osbert Lancaster and next to it is a John Piper church drawing. Below are two christmas cards by John Craxton sent to John Murray.
