Bound in three-quarter brown calf and marbled boards. The volume is rebacked with portions of the original spine laid over matching cloth. The covers are heavily rubbed and scuffed. Much of the original leather of the spine has chipped away. [xviii], ccxii, & [iv] pages, [2] leaves, and 129 pages. Illustrated with 8 full-page engraved plates, an engraved title, 11 textual illustrations, and 4 headpieces. The front and rear endpapers and blanks are detached but present. There are small crescent stain to the edge of several pages and an early owner's name is stamped in blue on the front blank. An internally nice attractive book. Volume 1 only of this beautifully produced 2 volume set. First Nicolas Edition, printed on large paper, considered by many as one of the most beautiful editions of Walton's classic.
