PETER OF BLOIS (1125/30-1212). Petri Blesensis Bathoniensis in Anglia Archidiaconi. Opera omnia ad fidem manuscriptorum codicum emendata, Notis & variis Monumentis illustrata. Editio nova... Paris: Sumptibus Simeonis Piget, 1667. Rare folio volume of the complete collected works of medieval theologian Peter of Blois. Though Peter hailed originally from France, he spent a considerable portion of his life in England acting as archdeacon to the archbishop of Bath, Reginald Fitzjocelin. Peter's letters have been long admired for their vivacity and erudition. His is also the author of a number of theological works, including a commentary on the Book of Job as well as others on faith, friendship, etc. The works of Peter of Blois remain scarce in publication and this volume of his complete works is an impressive 17th century folio presentation on them. Folio, title-page + [xxxiv] + 802pp. + [lxviii] + errata. Engraved device on title-page, engraved initials throughout. Handsome printing with wide margins. Light damp-staining to a few margins, book-plate on front paste-down. Bound in contemporary vellum, soiled, some scuffing with cracking to joints but still holding strong, lacking label on spine.
