Measuring approximately 1 inch across, with an elegant "A" on the front, "DOWLER BIRMINGHAM" on the reverse side ~ thisis one of several Confederate buttons from the collection of my father, Col. HarryDowning Temple. Born in 1911, my father was reared in Petersburg, Virginia. There he befriended "Bishop", an old veteran of the Siege of Petersburg (or Richmond-Petersburg Campaign) that was fought from June 9, 1864, to March 25, 1865. The campaign was nine months of trench warfare, and was singlehandedly reenacted many times by the old soldier for the benefit of Daddy and other boys who liked to search the battlefield for military artifacts. Daddy described Bishop as an energetic old fellow who sported long white hair and a cape. My sister and I agreed to sell the buttons, which are what remains of Colonel Temple’s lifetime of collecting. He sold off the greater part of his collection years ago, to buy a house in Richmond. In addition to collecting, he was a historian who wrote many books, including Donning the Blue and Gray: A pictorial history of the Cadet Uniforms of the Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College and the Virginia Polytechnic Institute . We will be posting the buttons one at a time for the next few weeks, offering free shipping and our personal guarantee of authenticity. If the button is not what the buyer expects, read more
