Samuel Cooper [1798 1876] was a career United States Army officer who began his military career in 1815, and served in the Second Seminole War and the Mexican American War. At the begining of the Civil War, Cooper's loyalities were with the South and he was a close friend of Jefferson Davis. Cooper resigned from the army and was immediately given a commission as a brigadier general on March 16, 1861. In May of 1861, he was promoted to full general and was appointed as both Adjutant General and Inspector General of the Confederate Army and held both posts until the end of the war. Samuel Cooper was one of only seven men in the Confederate Army to be promoted full general and due to his early date of appointment, he outranked such prominent generals as, Lee, Johnston, Beauregard and reported directly to Confederate President Jefferson Davis. Listed for auction is [DS] document signed by then United States General Samuel Cooper. The document is General Orders No 8, printed on Headquarters of the Army, Adjutant General Office Washington, March 28, 1853. The document is also dated at the top by hand, April 12th 1853, and signed ''S. Cooper'' above his printed rank as Adjutant General. The document measures 5.00 x 7.25 inches, it has general toning, trivial edge wear and [4] punch holes, otherwise it is in very good condition. The document read more
