Named Southern Cross of the Honor to 'T.S. McCalley.' Thomas S. McCalley was born near Huntsville, AL. in 1845 he enlisted in Co. F, Russell's 4th Alabama Calvary regiment As a private. The 4th was formed at Murfreesboro, Tenn in December 1862, by consolidating four companies from the 3rd (Forrest old) Tennessee Calvary regiment, six companies of the 4th Alabama battalion& the Russell rangers or the 15th Tennessee Calvary battalion. The regiment was assigned to general J.T. Morgan's & W.W Allen's brigade. It participated in the battles of Lexington, Trenton, Jackson, Parker's cross roads & chickamauga, then was behind Enemy lines. After many hardships, he was captured on the skirmish line at big shanty, Ga on June 8, 1864 & confined at rock island, ILL. ON June 12, 1864. He was paroled from Rock island on March 1, 1865 & rejoined his unit to surrender at Appomattox court house. This southern cross of honor has a correct planchet, missing the correct bar, an unknown type bar engraved T.S McCalley with a red, white & Blue ribbon attached to a jump ring & a good planchet. McCalley may have lost the original name bar or may have wanted to show that he was "reconstructed" by having red, white & blue ribbon on his southern cross of honor, being proud of his confederate service, but proud to be an American.
