A cabinet card photograph of Gen. Robert Doak Lilley, with Berkeley / Staunton, VA studio mark on mount below image. Lilley (1836-1886) was a Confederate Brigadier General who served in most of the leading battles of the Army of Northern Virginia. He joined the Confederate Army as a Captain of the Lee Rifles, which became a company in the 25th VA Infantry. The 25th VA joined the Army of Northern Virginia as part of Elzey's Brigade and fought with Stonewall Jackson in the Shenandoah Valley. Lilley was commended for his actions at the Battle of Cedar Mountain and at the Second Battle of Bull Run. He also participated in major battles such as Antietam and Gettysburg. Later in the war, Lilley led a brigade of infantry in the Shenandoah Valley. He was wounded three times, lost an arm, and was captured at Stephenson's Depot in July of 1864, but was rescued four days later and rejoined his brigade. In April 1865, Lilley surrendered and was subsequently paroled at Staunton, VA. > Acquired from the Paxton Family Estate
