If you'd like to see some of the others, please click on "view seller's other items" (which you will find at the top of this page). * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * ANTIQUE HAND-COLORED MAP ( genuine ) * * * * * MEXICO âe" AND âe" CONFEDERATE TEXAS * * * * * - 1864 - * * * * * Fantastic Civil War Map ***** This is a beautiful hand-colored antique map created in Richmond, Virginia, just as the American Civil War was about to begin, and then printed three years later in New York. This is a large map, measuring approximately 17 inches by 13 inches, and it shows all of Mexico and the entire state of Texas. The different areas of Mexico are differentiated by various pastel tints, and Texas, from the Rio Grande north to the âeoeIndian Territory,âe is left uncolored. T is also a small inset map of the âeoeTerritory and Isthmus of Tehuantepec.âe The detail work in this map is great, and t are literally hundreds and hundreds of cities, towns, lakes, mountains, rivers - including the Rio Grande - and other geographical features pictured in painstaking detail. A very nice, historic map, almost a century and a half old, and in excellent condition! The beautifully engraved border around this map is itself a work of art and a credit to the engraver's skill âe" the intricate design that frames this map is the hallmark of the Johnson maps of this era, and it greatly enhances the attractiveness of this map. T are probably well over 1000 different details in this beautiful map, and this is one of the finest hand-colored maps of this region produced during the Nineteenth Century. Alvin Jewitt Johnson was one of the great American mapmakers of the 19th Century. Johnson, with his partner Browning, produced their first maps in Richmond, Virginia in 1860, on the eve of the Civil War - these bore the designation "Johnson & Browning." When, a year later, the War began, Johnson packed up and moved to New York City, w he soon got a new partner, and for the rest of the War years, the maps bore the designation "Johnson and Wardâe (as does this one). This map is both a piece of history, and an outstanding item for display! It is a chance to get a map at a very reasonable price that was made during the Civil War and which includes Confederate Texas. This map is very finely detailed, with even the tiniest detail sharp and clear. Such incredible detail work was only possible because the map was made from a finely engraved metal plate. This map was produced first as a black-and white engraving, and then was meticulously hand-colored. (This was the usual method of producing colored plates of any sort before the advent of printed color. The famous wildlife engravings of Audubon and others were produced in exactly the same way, starting as uncolored engravings which were later hand-colored.) The coloring in hand-colored plates, including maps such as this one, is much more vivid and âeoealiveâe than printed color, and this map will display beautifully. The light pastel shades on this map enrich it tremendously, while allowing even the smallest details to remain clear and distinct. With an appropriate mat and frame, this map will make an outstanding exhibit of 19th Century cartographic art! This map is guaranteed ORIGINAL âe" IT IS GENUINE, NOT A "REPRO" OF ANY SORT! It was made 144 years ago, and is guaranteed to be authentic, and not a later reprint or any other type of reproduction! The bottom margin of this map is narrow, but sufficient for framing, and t are a few small edge tears (reinforced from behind with archival tape).
