Please bid on this fine example of the Conn Victor 80A Bb/A Cornet. If you are looking at this listing you probably are well aware of the particular qualities of this vintage professional instrument but do read on. The 80A was produced for many years by the Conn Company with the first models being named the New Wonder from 1914, becoming the Victor New Wonder and then the Victor until production ceased in the 60s. It was famed for its large “expanding bore” which gives the instrument a huge sound with a wonderful tone. It was popular in the U.S. with symphony orchestra musicians and jazz players alike. Bix Beiderbecke famously played one on many of his recordings. These instruments are however relatively rare in the UK and very hard to find in this condition. The 80A Victor is easily distinguished by the ‘opera glass micro tuner to the bell tube and its distinctive shape and size. This particular example has the serial number 559996 which dates it to 1953. It has “ The 80A will play in A as well as Bb by extending the tuning slides.
