This new process was meant to be a less costly alternative to the one used by Tiffany, Steuben, and others which produced glassware with internal iridescence. It also replaced the process of cold-painting, which later became known as "Goofus" treatment .Molten glass was poured into a mold and then forced by a "plunger" under great pressure into that mold's design. The glass was removed from the mold, reheated, and then hand-shaped to final form by spinning, flaring and/or adding special edge treatment . Still hot, it was then sprayed with a metallic salt solution , which bonded with the glass. The resulting metallic film reflected various spectra of light to create the lovely iridescence for which Carnival Glass is known. The type of metallic salt used and the thickness of application determined both color and intensity.IMPERIAL began Carnival production in 1909, in Bellaire, Ohio.
