In 1960 Michael was a wholesale fruit and vegetable merchant and pulled his own produced to and from market under a C carriers licence. By 1968, he had acquired an operator's licence and was able to carry goods for other small merchants and consolidate loads for small growers. This began the gradual development of his haulage interest. However, fruit and vegetables are a seasonal and one-way traffic so Michael looked for back loads and other traffic to fill out with. Here he developed into a variety of cargos from general haulage to manufactured goods, and with his location in Canterbury only 30 minutes away from Dover he was offered part loads by agents for the ports.From then on the business grew from just two vehicles to the 18 units and 22 trailers that made up the fleet, operating long haul from the Garden of England to the arid deserts of the Middle East 365 days a year.
