This is a commemorative enameled beaker that was made in honor of the coronation of Tzar Nicholas II and Alexandria in May 1896. It is in excellent condition . The decoration includes the Russian Imperial double-headed eagle and the initials of Nicholas II and Alexandra in cyrillic script, above the date 1896. The cup measures a little more than 4 inches from top to bottom, 2 and 3/4 inches across the bottom and 3 and 5/8 inches across the top. These cups are also known as the "blood cups" or "cup of sorrow" because an estimated 1/2 million people turned out for the coronation and the traditional free food and gifts that were dispersed afterwards. When they thought the dispersal had begun, the crowds surged forward, and nearly 2000 people were trampled to death.Nicholas was the last emperor of Russia. He ruled from 1894 until his rule ended with the Russian Revolution in 1917, after which he and his family were executed by the Bolsheviks. In 1981 Nicholas and his immediate family were canonized as saints by the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia as martyrs.
