Coston Copper Hand Flare Container 1920's -I got this many years ago to complete my Lyle Line Throwing Cannon collection -I believe this container is made of copper and probably not brass. The handle is bronze as well as the lid. These look like sand castings. Lid is very heavy. I choose a small place on the bottom, center of the container for polishing ( see photo ). This was for final identafacation of the type of metal. Copper. -On front of container it reads: HAND RED FLARE DISTRESS SIGNAL USCG APPROVAL NO. 160. 021/2/0 COSTON SUPPLY CO. NEW YORK -One of the pictures above was taken inside the container. That's why the spelling is in reverse. -If the second part of the above number is a date then this container is from the turn of the century makeing it 114 years old ( Feb.21 1900 ). -Sometimes I have trouble matching up the threads on the lid. -Wide (About) 6.25" Tall:12" Handle Wide: 4.75" Tall: 1 3/8" Weight: 6lbs.
