Coventry Astral English Antique Mantel Clock This is a VERY beautiful example of an Antique English Cabinet Mantle Clock in GREAT RUNNING CONDITION! English clocks were one of the best made in the world. They have very heavy well made movements and run for many, many years without wear. This clock looks great and was made around 1900. The movement has a serial number of 40533. This one has an original signed Coventry Astral 8-day time and strike movement , which chimes on every half hour and also strikes the hours on the hour on a heavy duty cathedral gong with a beautiful sound. The movement is heavy duty with thick, solid plates and works great. You can adjust the clock for fast or slow with the nut in the center of the very large, heavy brass pendulum. The large size and weight of this pendulum makes this a very accurate clock for a mantel clock. The clock has a nice quiet tick also. The case is in great condition, even the rear door is original with all the original hinges and catch. It looks like it is made of oak wood. The dial is original and all the numbers are readable with some wear to be expected on a 110 year old clock. The bezel is original with a heavy beveled convex glass over the dial which looks original also. Complete with a brass key for winding it once a week. The case is made of solid wood (OAK?) with its original finish and looks great with very few dings for its age only one small chip on the top right (see pictures). It has its original four wooden feet. This clock has just been cleaned, oiled and checked for proper operation so you won't have to have this service done for years - it's ready to go! The heavy duty construction of both the movement and the case of this clock tells me that it was top of the line in its day. Although most antique clocks were built well, this one is by far more sturdy and well designed. This clock measures 13 1/2 inches high, 9 inches wide and 6 inches deep.
