Cowan Pottery Scarf Dancer Design Officially Licensed Metal Doorstops/Bookends 1927 (please note ORIGINAL Scarf Dancer in first photo is NOT included in this auction; offering only the two metal doorstops/bookends) Fans and collectors of Cowan Pottery will be aware that R.G. Cowan was SO successful with many of his flower frog designs that other companies in German, Czechoslovakia, Japan, etc… began to copy specific works – one of the most popular was his Scarf Dancer design. Guy Cowan took the unusual step to protect designs such as the successful Scarf Dancer by applying for a U.S. patent on his design in 1926. He was awarded a patent in 1927. At this point, Cowan could continue to fight the imitators in court or begin to license his own designs. He selectively licensed some of his designs for other products. you have two metal (guessing they are painted cast iron) replicas of Scarf Dancer. Bassett’s book says that “a 1927 advertisement reveals that the bookends were manufactured by or for George C. Kindt and Co, New York.” The ladies were originally painted gold and have been used enough that the paint has been worn in spots to see through to the metal underneath. The bottom of each still has it’s felt pad. They each weigh 1.5 pounds. Will mail them parcel post unless you request a different method.
