3" Crane MOCKING BIRD Steam Whistle w/Orig Valve Very Rare Whistle In Pristine Condition "This Novel Piston Whsitle is particularly adapted for River Boats, Fog Signals, Fire Alarms, etc., making a different sound from the ordinary Steam Whistle, being so constructed that the sound can be changed instantly, where-by Boats, etc., using them can be easily distinguished at a long distance" Crane 1883 Catalog, pg. 75 To call this a "rare" whistle is a significant understatment. MOCKING BIRD whistles were only made by a very few companies in the United States and Canada, and this 3" diamter bell example is the smallest made by CRANE. A mocking bird whistle changes pitch by the use of a moveable baffle located inside the bell which is controlled by the long arm which extends down through the valve body. Pulling the handle down opens the whistle valve and if pulled far enough the baffle moves down and shortens the length of the bell which raises the pitch of the whistle. Conversly when the arm is pushed up, the baffle moves up, lengthening the bell and lowering the pitch. The bell is supported by two outside brass arms and capped by three matching acorns.
