For auction is an bronze advertising paperweight of a crouching, ready-to-spring, roaring lion. The advertiser is the Martin W. Hysong Co. Funeral Home at 1300 N. St. N.W., Washington, DC. The advertising - the name and address of the company - is impressed at the bottom on both sides of the sculpture. The Hysong Funeral Home has been at this address since 1939, so 1939 is the earliest possible year for the bronze. It could be that the newly opened Home used this advertising piece to make people aware of its existence. While 1939 is a good guess for the date, we do not believe the bronze was created any later than the 1950s, as the heyday for this type of advertising had passed by then. The sculpture is in good condition, with no nick, dents, bangs, holes, scratches or any other pronounced damage. There is oxidation, several spots on the back of the lion and quite a bit near the base on the front and back of the sculpture. All in all, a very nice and very collectible vintage advertising piece.
