Hello From Crow Knives, We continue to make changes (even though they may be minute) we are ever trying harder to make a better knife at a good price.So we have made some changes to the 09 stock.This year I decided to design a line locker that was functional. It gave us the ability to stiffen the spine and have one less moving part to our already very strong knives.Even though the line locker system is truly a failsafe system, I never liked digging my thumb down inside the knife to unlock it. So our first change was to layer back a notch in the handle of the knife so that you can easily remove the lock safety system.Another frustrating aspect to the line locker system is most of them are standard small pieces of steel that sometimes lock and sometimes don't. So I designed this one to actually be a part of the handle.Basically is as strong as the knife itself.Our next improvement was to toughen up our steel (it's important to understand that when you're working with Damascus steel that t is a fine line between strong and brittle) high carbon steel has a tendency once tempered to become extremely brittle, the harder it gets the more brittle it gets.So as any master smith will tell you finding that line can sometimes drive you crazy.In Japan they make some of the finest layered steel that exists, and a true Samurai Sword they say will never need to be sharpened, it is extremely hard at the edge yet holds its flexibility towards the center (and can cost $5000-$10,000) a good Japanese sword is hard to find pre-World War II.So,, hardening our steel we had to give up some of our wonderful patterns, but I felt it was appropriate for those who use our folders. They still look very nice but they take even longer now to sharpen.Our next addition, are the wooden boxes that we ship them in.They look very nice but they're also very functional. Should you decide to store your knife or display it, a concealed hinge box will be a safe place for you to store your clean, oiled, sharp knife.We didn't want the knife to sit flat on its side in the new boxes with discoloration during long periods of storage, so it will have a small piece of foam and the knife will sit on its edge.These pieces will not contain any oil in them as you may choose the oil you wish for your knife to be familiar with.When you get your knife it has been worked, cleaned, sharpened with virgin olive oil.As always with Crow Knives, we understand how hard it is to actually know if the knife you've bought is right for you.
