I continue to sell my large collection of Civil War letters and postal history. I am offering a cover franked with a CSA #12 tied with a partial Richmond, Virginia cancellation. The enclosed two-page letter in pencil is from Confederate soldier James M. Short of the 3rd Battalion, Virginia Reserves (Chrisman's). The letter is datelined "October the 21, 1864, Stuerds [Stuart] Hospitall, Richmond, Va". The letter is addressed to Short's mother Jane living in Fancy Hill, Va. in Rockbridge County. The letter concerns Short's illness and subsequent stay in the hospital. Compared to Army life Short thinks he has it pretty good in the hospital: "I had a good bed to sleep in. We have had some fine eatens since we been We have had a fine time of it. I would like to stay all the time. . . .Our boys moved down to the brest work and I dident care about going". T is more content about being issued new clothing and shoes. The CSA #12 is cut close on the top and left side and the cover has an opening tear extending about 2" down the front center. The enclosure is in excellent shape. This scarce soldiers letter and cover would make a fine addition to any Civil War collection.
