CUPRITE on CHRYSOCOLLAMashamba West, Shaba, Zaire DESCRIPTION Dimensions: 1.8 x 1.2 x 0.7 cm Composition: Cuprite - Cu 1+ 2OMalachite - Cu 2+ 2(CO 3)(OH) 2Chrysocolla - (Cu 2+ .Al) 2H 2Si 2O 5(OH) 4 . nH 2O Comments: You are bidding on a fine small thumbnail-size specimen of deep red cuprite on a matrix of chalky blue chrysocolla. The cuprite crystals displays two distinct forms: the octahedron and the dodecahedron. T is a minor deep green patina of malachite on one cuprite crystal (visible in the image below. This classic association from this classic African locality comes with its original lable of the late Gilbert Gauthier. Gilbert is the author of the Katanga special issue of the Mineralogical Record and the Mashamba West article of the same publication.
