And I appreciate your interest! CURTA Mechanical Calculator. Type II. Made in Liechtenstein, 1963 (based on website date code listing). By Contina Ltd Mauren. Please see photos as the unit is in pristine condition and though I am not an expert by any means, I have followed the instructions to try a few exercises and everything seems to work correctly and all parts move freely. If you have any questions or would like me to test/check anything, please ask and be thorough in what you would like me to try. The metal canister does show light wear marks but is in fine working condition. This also comes with the foldout manual. There is one pencil "doodle", I would assume my Grandfather added..no extra charge for this artwork. There are no other parts, packaging, or paperwork other than what you see in these pictures. Description from a website: The CURTA 'pepper-grinder' type mechanical calculator was re-designed from memory by Curt Herzstark while he was a prisoner in Buchenwald concentration camp during World War II from his 1938 Austrian patent. The first example was manufactured in Liechtenstein in 1947. The eleven 0-9 sliders on the side are input figures and sight holes in the top provide a readout. Calculations are performed by the rotating handle and/or the rotating top of the drum. The CURTA can perform addition, subtraction, division, roots, squares and many other calculations. I can send information to a great site that shows extensive details on these. Ebay would not allow me to attach the link. My Story: I received a few items after my Grandfather passed away from my Grandmother. He was a developer in California although I do not believe he used this in his trade. It seems to be in very near mint condition, does not appear to have been used much at all. I have a couple musical instrument related items from him that I am keeping and/or handing down to my kids. Music relates to me as I am a musician. The calculator is not something I would ever really “relate” to as much as a collector or numbers person might. I am hoping my Grandfather would understand why I am selling this, I think he would. I was laid off from my demanding job a year ago, have not been offered any job as of yet, and due to this demanding previous job, have not been able to visit my kids on the other side of the country for just over 2 years now. I no longer have credit cards so that is not an option, and obviously have no income now. I have a very understanding ex wife who has been very patient with zero child support and has simply said, “if you can find a way to come see them, that’s all they want and all I want for them until you can get back to work again.” So not to come off with a total sob story. That is why I am selling this. I will use 100% of this sale to drive out to see my kids and hopefully stay for a week or two and be able to do some fun things with them to make up for lost years without their Dad. It’s just my upfront and honest, real situation. Not meant to burden a potential buyer in any way. Just a hope that the person buying or the best offer for this will be a collector who will very much enjoy and relate to this calculator as I know my Grandfather was like, and also a collector with a big heart that may understand the importance of just being Dad.
