albumen photograph with manuscript caption on verso Monument to General Custer erected at West Point Military Academy by the Custer Memorial Association, Aug. 29, 1879 - The Dedication Ceremonies, 8.5" x 11.5". After the Battle of Little Big Horn, Custer's troops were buried on the battlefield and the land became a national cemetery in 1879. Custer however, was brought back east and buried in West Point's cemetery in 1877. The Thomas Minckler Collection of Western Americana Condition: Edge and corner wear; small tears along lower corner; some stray ink marks in trees.
