These artifacts were originally designed to be enjoyed by their owners and I have tried to return these treasures to a state which will both charm and enchant their new owners and show the skill and craftsmanship of old. STUNNING DESIGN!!! This ring comes from a batch of Celtic artifacts that were found near a burial site in the Danube Valley and dates from 600 - 300 B.C.This fabulous ring is of the "Pagan Tear" variety and is both the largest AND most highly decorated example that I have seen in a LONG time!The "tear" shaped bezel measures 13mm X 15mm and is quite thick. Those of you familiar with this ring type will know that this is a large sized bezel for this type of ring and it REALLY stands out.Look at the bezel engraving....TERRIFIC!!!T is a great figure of a "Tree of Life" or "Tree of Knowledge" engraved in the center of the bezel. Most of you will be familiar with the standard design of this type but this example is heads-and-shoulders above the rest. T is the typical horizontal bar filled with triangles which I believe represents this life or earth. Below this design it looks like the roots of the tree. Above the "Earth" is one of the largest and most highly decorated trees that you are likely to see. Coming off of the "trunk" are 4 curved branches which look like they are burdened with fruit hanging down from two other branches. T looks to be a smaller branch or symbol at the top which probably symbolizes reaching toward heaven or towards the future. It almost looks like upraised hands and not just branches with a few leaves.The "TREE of LIFE" is a VERY ancient symbol that dates back to prehistoric times and was used by many cultures. When a Celtic tribe cleared the land for a settlement, they always left a great tree in the middle, known as the "crann bethadh," or Tree of Life, that embodied the security and integrity of the people. Chieftains were inaugurated at the sacred tree, for, with its roots stretching down to the lower world, its branches reaching to the upper world, it connected him with the power both of the heavens and the worlds below. One of the greatest triumphs a tribe could achieve over its enemies was to cut down their mother tree, an outrage punishable by the highest penalties. Because trees have their roots in the unseen world of spirit, they are doorways into that world. That most magical of Celtic trees, the oak, derives its Gaelic name, (Old Irish daur, Welsh derw) from the Sanskrit word duir, that gives us "door." Many scholars believe that the Druids, who worshipped within sacred groves, derived their name from this word, combined with the Indo-European root wid, to know, becoming the "Wise Ones of the Oakwood." T are also a few linear engravings decorating the shoulders of this ring. The color and shine of this ring are both 1st rate and is super thick and solid all over. I think this shows the importance of some of these objects and that it may have been used as a badge of office or something which would also account for this example being more highly decorated than the usual item. Above and below are two more views of this superior ring. The color and shine are incredible for a ring that is about 25 centuries old!This ring was cast from a copper-rich alloy which gives it a super bright golden color.
