ROMAN SILVER RING Golden Goddess "VENUS" Votive Ring Antiquities Corner is proud to present this fine historical artifact for your collecting pleasure. These artifacts were originally designed to be enjoyed by their owners and I have tried to return these treasures to a state which will both charm and enchant their new owners and show the skill and craftsmanship of old. What a SUPER ring! This ring was found at a Roman military encampment site in the former Roman Province of Moesia and dates from 200 - 500 A.D.This ring features a raised, oval bezel which has a votive motif on it.T is a flower engraved rather deeply in the center of the bezel. The engraving is of some type of "LILY"The Lily is known as the "Virgin's Flower" and also as the symbol of Innocence, Light , Purity, Perfection, Mercy and Majesty. In Greco-Roman mythology this flower was sacred to Hear and Artemis. In Byzantium and early France, it was a royal emblem (the fleur-de-lis is sometimes considered a stylized lily). Primarily the lily has Christian associations, usually attached to the Virgin Mary w it signifies chastity. when Christ is shown as the judge of the world with a lily in his mouth, the flower represents mercy. A lily and a sword signify guilt and innocence. I have to talk about the metal that this ring was cast from. I think that it is some type of trade or jewelry grade silver because it will pass through all of the various shades as it tarnishes but it always shines up nicely as you can see in my pictures. I think that a lot of these early rings had a lot of other trace metals in the silver alloys they used for rings which I believe that they did for both economy and strength. I have never been able to find a definitive test for silver content but have to go by color, hardness and the ringing sound it makes on a desk top. The surface of this ring is silky smooth and with perfect shine. In addition to the nice bezel engravings, t are swirling "vine" designs on the shoulders of this STUNNER. Above and below are a couple more views of this remarkable ring.Every surface of this ring is as smooth as glass.
