For sale Civil War Letter written by John Warner Sturtevant, April 27-29th, 1864 at District of Carrollton, LA, Camp of the 14 th New Hampshire Volunteer Infantry, attached to 2nd Division 19 th Army Corps. Letter is in ink, five pages 9 3/4 X 7 1/2 inches, very readable and in very good condition. Comes without envelope. John Warner Sturtevant enlisted on 8/31/1862 at Keene , NH as a Private. On 9/23/1862 he mustered into "G" Co. NH 14th Infantry. He was Mustered Out on 7/8/1865 at Savannah, GA He was listed as wounded 9/19/1864 Opequan, VA, discharged for disability 1/18/1865 (place not stated). He was discharged before muster; discharge revoked 1/31/1865 (place not stated). (Restored to command) Promotions: 1st Sergeant 5/1/1863 , 2nd Lieut 10/17/1863 , 1st Lieut 1/1/1864 , Capt 1/4/1865 . Headquarters Dist. of Corrollton, La April 27th, 1864 Dear Friends at Home, Our mail came again yesterday but brought nothing from you but your letter frim Horatio. I am greatly disappointed for nearly all our boys had letters from home acknowledging the receipt of their letters from Key West . I had thought you must have got it by the 11th instant and as our mail brought letters of the 15th, I could not account for not receiving one from you. Horatio only wrote a word but said he received mail from K.W. I was suprised to hear of Jude Caleb's death. I thought he was tough and so temperate that he would hold out a goodmany years longer. What was his desease? You did not write. My duties on the Staff still continue light, easy and pleasant. Last night I took a horseback ride on my "grey charger". She is very poor now but is a good mare and with care and attention will make a good rider. I like her very much. Today I have been on a very pleasant but tiresome trip. Last night I was directed by the Col. to visit today Pass Manchac, one of the outer stations of our District and Inspect the troops and defences as t had been Guerilla bands hovering in the vicinity for some time past. The Pass is 37 miles from by R.R. and runs from Lake Maurepas to Lake Pontchartrain . The R.R. formerly ran to Jackson , Mississippi and in busy season did a tremendous business. The better part of the way it runs through swamps and marshes, crosses bayous and branches, and is by far the wildest country I ever was in. All along the mud I could see Alligators three to ten feet long, black ugly looking snakes, etc. Occasionally we would come to a little clearing made by wood choppers and we also passed several steam saw mills. The woods on either side run thick with undergrowth and perfectly impassible. I Inspected the troops, looked at everything in and around the Pass, made a map of all matters of interest and returned tonight. This evening I have been busy making my written report to the Col. who sends it to Maj. Genl. Reynolds. Tomorrow I am ti inspect 4 Companies of the 12th Ill. Cav. It will be new business to me for I never saw a Company of Cavalry inspected. I can learn this as easily as any of them. Yesterday our Regiment was inspected by Col. Smith, Inspector General of Dept. Gulf. He was accompanied by Maj. Genl Reynolds. He was highly pleased with our Regiment and particularily with Company G. He praised them to the skies and well he might for they were by far the best looking Company in the line and ought to be the envy of all. The past week has made some changes in our Regimental Officers. Capt. Frank Barker has resigned & his resignation has been accepted subject to approval of the President. Lt. Holbrook of Company B is also out of service and Lt. Smell of Company K died last night of Consumption. Poor fellow, he has been ----- for 13 months and been gradually failing day by day.
