L.D. Lothrop's Patent FOG HORN 2 SS MIDWAY Pat Aug 20 1901 #10710 *SD2Vintage L.D. Lothrops Patent FOG HORN Circa 1903Offered here is a wonderful piece of MARITIME HISTORY. An original L.D. Lothrop's Patent Fog Horn from the SS MIDWAY w/ low serial number #10710. The wood box measures approximately 18.5" x 16.5" x 9.5". While the wood handle of the horn measures 10.5". The box itself is still painted with the original red paint and black LOTHROP stamp. The leather strap is detached on one end. The horn bellows may need some attention as the hand crank is a little stiff.The Fog Horn has the original brass marker plate stamped with the serial number #10710, L.D. Lothrop, Gloucester MA, and the Pat Aug 20, 1901The foghorn was invented by Llewellyn Day Lothrop, born in Appleton, Maine in March of 1836. Mr. Lothrop opened a general ship chandler’s business in 1880 on Duncan Street in Gloucester, Massachusetts and soon became the leading chandlery for fishing gear. He invented different swivels & hooks for fishing, but was best known for the famous, Lothrop PATENT Fog Horn of which no Gloucesterman would sail without. The foghorn in this listing is an example of those manufactured by the L.D. Lothrop Co.The designation at the end of the title line is for internal inventory only and unrelated to the item.
