The dazzling instrumentalist toiled in relative obscurity for over 20 years before landing on Elektra with 1991's 88 ELMIRA STREET, his first of two albums for label before his early death in 1994.As an interpreter, Gatton is equally comfortable with Earl Hagen's "Harlem Nocturne," Les Baxter's "Quiet Village," and Bill Monroe's "Gold Rush." As a composer, he understands the workings of jazzy shuffles, up-tempo boogies, slow blues, and evocative soundtrack themes.
