EXTREMELY RARE DANSK/QUISTGAARD RARE WOODS MUTENYE TRAY C. 1962You are bidding on an extremely-rare and desirable tray designed by Jens Quistgaard in exotic Mutenye wood for Dansk c.1962. This tray, part of the "Rare Woods" line, was Dansk's submission to the luxury market in the heyday of the optimistic Kennedy years, in 1962. Made from such exotic woods as Wenge, Mutenye, Palisander, Pao Rosa and Cocobolo, the "Rare Woods" line was the most dramatic, luxurious and expensive line of decorative objects Quistgaaard ever produced, and is at the pinnacle of desirability for Dansk collectors and all collectors of important Post-WWII design. The Rare Woods line was extremely-expensive when new, and was only produced for a short-time between c. 1962 and 1963. It was completely phased-out by the mid-sixties, and examples are difficult-to-find and command high prices at auctions and Modernism galleries. This tray uses the undulating bands of dark and light Mutenye, with its rich grain and slightly-iridescent sheen to bring out the sculptural form of the gently-arched curves of the top and bottom contrasted with the scooped-out curves of the sides. This creates a brilliant interplay of positive and negative space, while simultaneously serving as the 'handles' to carry the tray to the table or buffet.
