This is a nice specimen of Darwin Glass from Tasmania , Australia . Darwin glass is an impactite--the result of a meteorite impact. The awesome power of the extraterrestrial visitor striking the Earth melted the ground turning it into molten glass and sending it flying in a giant splash. The molten material, twisting and turning through the air, cooled and hardened, landing sometimes miles away from the point of impact. The first documented piece of Darwin glass was discovered in 1915 but the source could not be found. This first specimen was found 5 miles from the crater that was eventually discovered in 1972. Darwin crater is 5 miles south of Mt. Darwin in heavy vegetation, an environment that helped conceal its wabouts for so many years. The crater is 3281 feet across and 656 feet deep. While Darwin glass is classified an impact rock from a meteorite, many people cannot miss the fact that its age, roughly 700,000--800,000 years old, is virtually the same as for the Australasian Tektites, and suspect that the same event created both. Certainly t are some differences, but it may be from an asteroid, or comet, that struck Earth in pieces. One of the smaller pieces caused the Darwin crater and its molten material, while another larger chunk (or chunks) was responsible for ejecting material out of our atmosp which then fell back as
