This auction is for a David Bolton single-manual harpsichord, built in the Italian style. It has two eight-foot ranks plus a buff stop, and the compass is four octaves and a fifth (A - E). In this video I demonstrate a variety of registrations on the instrument, close-miked in a dry acoustic.This is a somewhat reluctant sale, after having toyed with the idea of renting the instrument out. It has a rich, resonant tone that is suitable for a wide range of baroque and renaissance music and it is of robust construction. I have been using it as a concert instrument but it is slightly too long to go into the service lift at one of the main venues I use and the staff are getting tired of carrying it up the stairs. I have made the decision to sell it, so I can get a slightly smaller instrument in time for the start of the next season in September. The instrument is one semitone shorter than the original compass (A - F) in order to allow for a simple transposing mechanism (choose between A=415 and A=440). This simple mechanism means that there are small gaps at either end of the keyboard, allowing it to be moved to the left or right in order to set the pitch, which were not present at the original build.It is 200cm long, 90cm wide at the keyboard end, and 20cm deep (without stand).
