DAVID MAYDOLE CAST STEEL ADZE EYE HAMMER. FIRST OF ITS KIND. GOOD CONDITION. David Maydole was a blacksmith in Norwich NY in the mid 1800s when he invented the adze-eye hammer. It had the eye opening larger at top of the head than the entrance hole for the handle at the lower end of the head. It caught on almost immediately and by 1900 almost every toolmaker made wooden handled hammers with the adze-eye. Unfortunately for Maypole, he never patented his invention even though it was clearly the first of its kind. The head is 3 1/2" wide and has a deep curved claw. The tight hickory handle is 11 1/2" and without any checks. There are three small stamps on the bottom of the handle. I can't tell whether they are numbers or letters.
