Up For Auction: Original Apple Pressing of David Peel's 1972 Oft- Banned Classic The Pope Smokes Dope, produced by John & Yoko. Includes original Lyric Sleeve For those of you unfamiliar, Bruce Eder at AllMusic says it well: "...a phantasmagoria of countercultural images, sensibilities, phrases, and humor, and this album is arguably the finest piece of musical agitprop ever to emerge from the '60s counterculture (even if it took till 1972 to appear). Under John Lennon and Yoko Ono's production, Peel is presented without compromise with the most rudimentary of guitar and percussion accompaniment, none of it amplified, yet it does hold together as a cont and cohesive statement, musical and otherwise." Vinyl is Strong VG+, verging on EX, I have rarely played this copy and I doubt that anyone else played it much before me. The vinyl & labels are Near Immaculate, the exception being a small cluster of surface marks as "Birth Control Blues" segues into "The Pope Smokes Dope." This cluster results in some light tics for a few revolutions but, all in all, the LP sounds practically brand new. Jacket is Strong VG+ , t is some light & minor corner & ring wear. T is some bubbling along the opening edge of the back cover, to me it doesn't look like it was ever wet but just that it has come unglued a bit. Minor dings on the spine edge corners read more
