This is a lovely brass box decorated on the outside with a red finish and the top further decorated with an oriental scene. The box measures 4.5 cm square and stands 4.5 cm high. The lid opens to reveal a hinge and two semi-circular attachments. As the lid is opened these raise a flat brass panel on which rests a glass inkwell. This means the indwell comes upwards as you open the lid of the box. The glass inkwell has a brass collar and hinged lid. The inkwell measures 3.2 cm square at the base and is 3.5 cm high to the top of the lid. This is a great novelty desk item presented in an oriental style. We this box and inkwell date from late Victorian or Edwardian times, but cannot be sure of this. The base has a small dunt in it and the lid has a small part of the red finish missing. This is an unusual, novelty desk item.
