Antique tin container ca. 1870 made by F. Dewey & Sons, Boston, MA and glass lamp font. Dewey began operations about 1860 and supplied many mills in New England and Quebec. I believe the container with grip handle provided a safe portable light which could be used for checking mill operations. Additionally, the glass oil guard ring, similar to the patented G. Lomax ring, would be important to safety. Although Dewey made glass fonts, I cannot establish this one is original to the container. The burner unit is likely from one of the Connecticut makers. Patent dates: Sept. 20, 1870 on font bottom. Burner thumb wheel dates: PAT. Oct 16, 1860. July 21 1863. Additional characters near thumb wheel hard to read. Measurements: Tin Container: 5-1/2"Dia.; 2-3/8"H; 3"H handle. Glass Font: 4-1/8"Dia. bottom; 5-1/4"Dia. top ring. Total Assembly Height: 6-1/2" Condition excellent. Combined shipping available.
