Dewitt Clinton NYC signed check 1811 Dewitt Clinton (1769-1828). Mayor of NYC, Candidate of the Peace Party for president of U.S. He proposed the idea of a canal across New York state, and he oversaw the construction of the Erie Canal from 1816 until it opened in 1825. The canal assured the 19th Century development of New York City as the major port of trade with the Midwest.This 7 x 5” check was signed when Clinton was Mayor in 1811. Minor toning with age. Generally good condition. Very collectible.COA insures its authenticity.
