Disney Villains Chess Set Limited Edition This is a special limited edition chess set, featuring playing pieces modeled on the most infamous Villains from classic Disney animated features: The Queens are the Wicked Queen from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937) and Maleficent from Sleeping Beauty (1959). The Kings are Chernabog from Fantasia (1940) and the Horned King from The Black Cauldron (1985). The Bishops (two each) are Jafar from Aladdin (1992) and Scar from The Lion King (1994). The Rooks (two each) are the Queen of Hearts from Alice in Wonderland (1951) and Ursula, the sea witch from The Little Mermaid (1989). The Knights (four total) are the Headless Horseman from The Adventures of Ichabod and Mister Toad (1949), and the pawns (16 total) are the Raven, Diablo, from Sleeping Beauty (1959). Playing pieces have been specially sculpted for this edition by Disney artists, either from character drawings created for the official Disney Style Guides for the animated features, or from original model sheets and character size comparison charts used by animators during the production of the films, or both. The finished pieces are resin sculptures cast from the originals, hand pained and hand finished. The playing surface is a square 20" x 20" board of eight rows of eight squares each, alternately black and white, encased by a black 22" x 22" gloss curved frame. The set is packaged in a deluxe black gift box with a gold foil hot stamp which reads: "Disney Villains Chess Set." Each piece can be stored in its own compartment inside the gift box. This limited edition was created by The Disney Credit Card and produced in 1997. It is comprised of a limited edition of 1,937 sets, commemorating the year (1937) of the premiere release of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs , which marks the appearance of the first Disney feature villain, the Wicked Queen.
