In 1846 Congress approved the construction of a series of forts to be built along the Oregon Trail. Fort Kearny. Located in central Nebraska, its construction was completed in 1848 and was the first government fort to offer protection from hostile Indians and assistance to the emigrants. By the 1860’s it also became a home station for the Pony Express as well as a stage coach station. It was named in honor of General Stephen Watts Kearny who had been responsible for a previous and short-lived fort of the same name near Nebraska City. During the 1840’s, 1850’s and 1860’s it is estimated that approximately 350,000 used the Oregon and Mormon Trails to go west in search of gold or new homes. A majority of these people stopped at Fort Kearny for any number of reasons, necessity, mail service, or to just take a break from the monotony of traveling on the uninhabited Trail. This relic group is in as-dug condition and consists of a blacksmith forged iron miner's pick (15 1/2" long & weighs 5 lbs.), two military eagle buttons, eight different bullets, three Spencer casings and one 44 cal. casing. All relics dug from private land with owner’s permission and guaranteed to be from the stated location. If you have any questions please ask before bidding.
