When the Chas. Wm. Doepke Company of , Ohio, stopped making the Yardbird line of gasoline- and electric-powered backyard trains (track, engines, flatbed cars, track, ties and more), there were still people who wanted one. (The company had already discontinued the kid-powered Yardbird.)For those folks, it was either hope to find a used Yardbird or and unsold one in a retailer's stock--or do without. Some, like the the guy in this article, decided to make their own.That's right--build your own Yardbird! Gas or electric engine, tracks, etc. This piece shows and tells you how to do it. And the article takes it a step farther: it offers a couple of suggestions on variations in the design, like the caboose shown on the final page.This magazine and article are well over 60 years old. The cover is ripped (as shown in the final image) and falling off.
