Rare find. Sterling silver chocolate set. By Dominick & Haff. Twelve sterling silver and gilt chocolate spoons. One matching chocolate muddler. Pattern Renaissance #1894 Enchanting. Victorian, art nouveau decoration. Rich, beautiful and ornate. Most exciting--pattern features whimsical portrait in high relief on handles, and also, on backs of bowls. Bright-eyed fellow with long, curly locks and beard that swirl 'round his animated features. Expression on his countenance one of such good cheer, closely resembles Saint Nicholas. Portrait appears on gilded backs of spoons also.Gilt on both sides of bowls sometimes referred to as gold wash . History of Chocolate Spoons Back in the 1800s, h ot chocolate drinks required constant stirring to prevent chocolate from settling to bottom. Thus, chocolate spoons. The muddler is a long-handled spoon, used to stir chocolate in pot, before serving into specially designed cups. Maker's Mark Horizontal mark of Dominick & Haff features linked rectangle, circle and diamond shapes (which sometimes contain letters and/or numbers). To left of mark reads: STERLING . To right of mark (closer to handle top) reads: PAT-D.94. Measurements Spoons: 4 1/4 " long x 1 1/4 " diameter bowls Muddler: 7 5/8 " x 1 3/4 " diameter bowls Set weight: 9.5 ounces (270 grams), or 8.68 troy ounces. Condition Excellent.
