Offered by Over The Blue Horizon and recently obtained in Tokyo is a new, very nicely-done volume from the well-regarded FAMOUS AIRCRAFT OF THE WORLD (FAOW) Black Cover series: Number 145, 2011, “DORNIER DO 217.” One of the more versatile and useful Luftwaffe mid-war bomber (re)designs, the Dornier Do 217 remedied the shortcomings of the Do 17 while greatly advancing design/performance. In almost every way, the Do 217 was a success – it carried a much heavier bomb load than either the Heinkel He 111 or the Junkers Ju 88. It was also very fast, surpassing both aircraft in maximum speed. With its decent performance, it served a wide variety of roles including delivering the Fritz-X glide bombs and as a night fighter. Production ended in December 1943, but it continued to serve until the end of the war. The FAOW series began publication in the late 1960s and are highly illustrated monographs focusing on a specific aircraft or family of aircraft. Text is in Japanese, but the photographs, scale line drawings, cut-away drawings, cockpit diagrams, close-up detail drawings and profiles help transcend the written word and have appealed to aircraft researchers and aviation hobbyists to this day.
