The Dorset & Somerset Canal is a canal that never was. Beginning as a scheme to connect Bristol and Poole, by way of Frome and Wincanton with a branch serving the Somerset collieries round Nettlebridge, it was authorised in 1796 as a line from the Kennet & Avon near Limpley Stoke to near Blandford, retaining the coal stretch from Frome. Money ran out and the scheme failed in the early 1800s. Efforts to revive it were followed by railway projects, which were still echoing the Old Dorset & Somerset fifty year after its Act had been passed. 116 pages thick with 8 plates (or photos) and 10 text illustrations including maps.Part of the David & Charles Canal Histories series.Hardback with dustjacket - good condition. Please see my others in the series which I am offering.
