S.A. Douglas Volk (1856-1935) American portrait painter and the son of noted sculptor Leonard Volk. Best known for his portraits of Abraham Lincoln, one of which hangs in the Lincoln Bedroom at the White House. He was named after his mother's cousin (Abraham Lincoln's political rival) Stephen A. Douglas.Douglas Volk signed 1924 bank check made out to William Merritt Post (1856-1935) American painter. William Merritt Post was an accomplished tonalist painter known for his quiet and poetic rural landscapes. The artist studied under Carroll Beckwith at the Art Students League. He became an associate of the National Academy of Design and won a prize at a National Academy exhibition in 1910. Post also won a prize at the Pan-Am Exposition, Buffalo in 1901 and exhibited widely at all the major venues including the Salmagundi Club, Brooklyn Art Association, Boston Art Club, and Art Institute of Chicago. Paintings by the artist can be found at the Newark Museum, Heckscher Museum and the Mattatuck Museum which held a major retrospective on the artist in 1998.� William Merritt post has signed the back of the check.
