Duca Carlo (Savinelli) - Refurbished & ready to Smoke This is a Duca Carlo pipe from Italy's giant Savinelli in excellent to near mint used condition. It is 6" long, 1 1/4" across the outside rim of the bowl and 1 3/4" deep. T are very minor teethmarks and/or chatter on the stem and very minor charring on the rim of the bowl. This one is a beauty. This one sold for $37.00 a couple of weeks ago but the winning bidder said his son was using his account and we agreed to cancel the transaction so it is again. Achille Savinelli Sr. opened in Milano (1876) a store dedicated to smokers. In 1890 his son Carlo succeeded him for about 50 years. The grandson of the founder, Achille Savinelli Jr (1918-1987) in association with Enea Buzzi started pipe production in Brebbia. They split in 1953, Savinelli setting up its own factory in Molina di Barasso. Savinelli produces quality pipes from mid-range all the way to hand made exceptional quality one of a kind beauties. Always a dependable smoke, sometimes an exceptional smoke but almost never just an ‘adequate’ smoke! Over 30 different lines of Pipes and a half dozen brands: Albatross, Alligator, Baronet, Bent Bob Pipes, Bings, Cadet , Capitol, Capt. Warren, Champagne, Coronet, Duca Carlo, Duca di Milano, Duca di Paolo , Fiammata, Grand Prix, Hercules, King's Cross, La Roma, Linea Artisan, Linea Più, Lollo , Melitta, Molinella, Oscar, Prince of Wales, Rimini, Roley, Royal Oak, Samanda, Sigla, Sport. The true giant of modern Italian Pipe production! I don't believe in a 'Reserve' price. The price I list as the opening price of an auction is the least I am willing to accept for the pipe - needless to say, I would hope the price gets bid up but if it doesn't, well, that is the chance a seller takes. A 'good' pipe is one that is made from quality briar, has been adequately cured and has the bore drilled correctly to provide for an easy draw. Thinner walled bowls will usually produce a hotter smoke yet too thick a bowl wall can produce a mediocre smoke. Some of your less expensive, massed produced pipes like Kaywoodie, Dr. Grabow, Medico are made from the same top quality briar as your top named, high priced brands. That is why they sell so well and have for a century or more. You will occasionally find an exceptional pipe from these companies but will almost always find an adequate to good smoke. Some smaller brands like Weber, Ehrlich, Jost, Brigham, LL Bean, provide the basic and a touch more. These are certainly the equivalent of your better known GBD, Savinelli, Comoy's, Butz-Choquin and Peterson products. The English Sasieni, in my opinion, is yet one more step above and again only in my opinion, rival Dunhill for quality and consistency. Then t are the 'Artisan' pipes, handmade by craftsmen like Tinsky, Davis, and Nording. Nothing can compare to the lovingly hand made pipe by a master craftsman. When you virtually walk into my Pipe shop on e-bay, the first thing you notice is that t are a lot of pre-smoked ‘estate’ pipes for around $10. Some of these have dings, scratches on the finish, worn but cleaned up stems, charring on the bowl rims. They are what they are – refurbished, fully sanitized good smoking pipes at a bargain price. The next thing you may notice is a few pipes listed at $20.00. These too are fully sanitized, refurbished but are usually pretty good brand names – if you looked elsew they would be listed for more, usually much more. Each and every pipe I sell – for $7.95 or for $24.95 or more, goes through a detailed process. The bowls are reamed and the insides sanitized, the outsides cleaned, oiled, waxed and buffed. The stems are sanitized, hand sanded, polished and oiled. Every single pipe takes at least an hour of my work – some require a lot more. A Pipe, you see, is not just a hunk of wood that has a hole in it for tobacco. A pipe is a thing of art, a work of craft, and an object of pleasure.
