For sale from the collection of a 19th century Antwerp family, is this masterdrawing. The collection was composed by the lady of the house between 1827 and 1828. Till present, the collection never changed. It contained 33 drawings and a large amount of engravings (mainly related to Antwerp). The collection was preserved in an album, which was sold by the descendents recently (which means all drawings from this collection are fresh on the market). The drawing, executed in pencil on rather thick laid watermarked paper, represents a study of a castleruin. The drawing, in our opinion, must have been made during a voyage. Authorship : The drawing is situated in the Dutch school, attributed to Jan Asselijn. JAN ASSELIJN (Dieppe before 1615 - Amsterdam 1652) : Asselijn belonged to the second generation of Dutch Italianting landscape-artists. Over more than five years, he was active in Italy (Rome), before he returned to Holland ca. 1645. Asselijn was very skilfull depicting ruins, and specialy artefacts of the Roman architecture. Size of the drawing : 33,4x23,3cm.Condition : good. Some scattered dirt throughout. Provenance : Antwerpen - collection Vandervoort.Frontside, right below : possibly a collectors mark (in ink)Backside : several notes. One refering to the attribution.
