DVH! 69x41 RARE Polyhedroid agate BEAD Fluorescent GRN Description A really cool, funky, rare, and original bead! This super unusual agate is from a slice of a nodule called a Polyhedroid agate. I hand cut this bead which measures 69x41mm by 10 mm thick with a 3mm drill hole. They are EXTREMELY rare! The outside edge of this bead is the natural edge of the outside of the agate nodule that I used to make this bead Both faces of this bead are low domed and highly polished. The outside banding of this agate is slightly translucent and the interior band is a dark black and grey. BUT WAIT!!! T's more! I discovered by CHANCE that this material has a FLUORESCENT GREEN banding in the agate under short wave ultraviolet light. I took the photo of the fluorescence under a single short wave ultraviolet light. That's not a traditional black light. Short wave is a special light used for viewing minerals and sterilizing things, and you don't look into it or it will burn your retinas out (if you look at it for awhile). But fluorescent stones are RARE and COOL!!! When a stone is fluorescent, AND an extremely rare agate, AND polished pretty, AND drilled so that you can WEAR it around your neck and talk about it, well, then they are even more desirable and RARE!!! You won't see another one like this!!! This would certainly be a great piece for the creative jeweler to work with. This unique agate represents one of the great mysteries of the geological world. My major resource for esoteric stone info is June Culp Zeitner's awesome book, Gem & Lapidary materials. is the text from the entry regarding this remarkable stone, "A surprising discovery in Brazil in the 1970âe(tm)s defied the usual conception of agate as more or less rounded nodules possessing concentrically layered, gracefully curved patterns. These strange agates formed perfectly straight sidesâe"hexahedrons, tetragons, pentagons, and other geometric forms. The polyhedroids, as they came to be called, were mined in a remote part of Paraiba, Brazil, for a few years until events closed the mine down." "The colors of the polyhedroids are gray, beige, buff, cream, white, blue gray, and black. Sizes range from 2 to 10 inches. The high grade chalcedony bands usually follow the outline of the angled exterior in concentric lines sometimes slightly wavy and then again appearing as straight as if they had been drawn with a ruler. Chalcedony bands may alternate with crystalline quartz bands. Most of the centers are hollow with smooth, low relief botryoidal linings often in black or white. Larger hollows are lined with quartz crystals. Composite specimens were found of several distinct individual shapes cemented together on their similarly angled planes by silica. Thins sheets of silica ad to many polyhedroid faces. The surfaces of some faces are as flat as if they had been lapped; others have light cross-hatched markings as if they need more sanding. Due to their lack of planes of symmetry they cannot be pseudomorphs. They may have started as flat sheets of silica in mudstone or limestone that allowed for boxwork-like joining, or they may have started as fillings of angle plated quartz.
