For a half century E. A. Carey has been making "Magic Inch" filtered pipes. The "Magic Inch" is an air chamber inserted between the imported briarbowl and the vented mouthpiece. The inch is vented at the top and atthe bottom, which allows cool outside air to enter and mix with the warm tobacco smoke inside the "Magic Inch" chamber. As the cool outside air enters the chamber, condensation of the moisture in the smoke occurs. Tobacco tars, oils, and moisture, which normally collect in pipes, are squeezed out of the smoke. The residue drops to the bottom of the chamber and is absorbed by the Papyrate sleeve. The Papyrate sleeve spreads the moisture over its entire surface so it is exposed to evaporation by the outside air. While today's E. A. Carey pipes are made in the U.S., many of the older ones came from others countries. I have seen E. A. Carey Magic Inch pipes made in Italy, Israel and, I believe, France. Ironically, E.A. Carey, which started out as an American pipe now has its international headquarters on the Isle of Guernsey off England. But, the company maintains an E. A. Carey Smokeshop in the U.S. and the Papyrate sleeves mentioned above can be purchased through that shop. It can be found online by Googling E. A. Carey Smokeshop. This particular Carey Magic Inch is stamped "GRECIAN." It carries the original patent number - read more
