K & E Keuffel & Esser 4012 Thacher's Calculating Instrument / Slide Rule / Calculator.This K&E, Keuffel & Esser / Thacher's Calculating Instrument / Slide Rule / Calculator is in nice condition. It is a Model #4012, Serial #5960.Edwin Thacher patented his design for this slide rule / calculator in 1881. The instrument features a unique sliding and rotating drum whose scales total over 30' long (if laid out in a line) allowing for highly accurate calculations. The idea was an immediate success with the scientific and engineering communities and K & E soon bought the rights and produced them in the United States.The overall condition of this instrument is very good when compared to others I have seen. The dovetailed mahogany case is in good condition as well with some scratches and areas of missing finish. On the outer scales, there is relatively little spotting and yellowing that is commonly seen among other examples. Please note that there is some deterioration of the paper scales on the very ends of the outer scales from use (see photos), but this does not appear to affect the functionality of the instrument. The inner drum is in good condition with all scales being perfectly legible and with minor yellowing on one end of the drum. The entire unit operates properly and smoothly.
