Here's a nice old ball shaped NC Elixer or Refrigerator jug that we're pretty certain was made by James (Jimmy) G. Teague back in the 1940's. We've seen a few of these over the years in solid color Art Glazes, but I can't say I ever saw another one in saltglaze. Jimmy worked at his brother, Duck Teague's, shop in Hemp NC from the 1920's until about 1937, when he took a job as the demonstrating potter at Martin Stangl's (Old Fulper Pottery) shop in New Jersey. There, Jim showed visitors the Old Timey art of making saltglaze stoneware, and the company ever produced a line of his work, known as Stangl Stoneware. Jim returned to NC sometime in the 1940's, and went back to work as a potter, primarily working with Duck again. We think this piece was produced after his return from NJ, as this form resembles some of the work he made up there. The jug stands 7.5" tall by 9.5" in length, and about 7" in diameter. This one is just as it came from the kiln, with no damages or any repair. There is a slight shrinkage/drying line where the handle attaches to the body, but that is a quite common thing with wood fired pottery. The jug ships USPS Priority OR Parcel Select (Economy) Insured Mail, your choice. All items can now be picked up in person at our store, Picker'z Antiques, in downtown Stoneville NC, if desired.
