RARE FANTASTIC SPYGLASS MARITIME TELESCOPE ENGRAVED BY THE OPTICIAN OF THE ROYAL FAMILY.Thirty inch long antique spyglass / telescope likely designed for maritime use. The scope appears to be made of brass, and leather with an in inscription that reads "ADJUSTABLE TUBE - THOS. HARRIS & SONS - OPTICIAN TO THE ROYAL FAMILY - OPPOSITE THE BRITISH MUSEUM - LONDON" Harris, Thos. & Son This maker worked between 1806 and 1900. Early scopes were often inscribed with italics on the first draw. Later (after c. 1840) scopes were inscribed with block printing. THIS ONE IS INSCRIBED IN ITALICS and is estimated to be from 1810-1840. T were two little leather pieces stitched on the leather grips. As you can see one little leather piece is missing. It's obvious in the photo, but I wanted to point it out again. Off to learn how to focus this scope. Will add more info later today. I would still say that the lenses need some cleaning as the image (leaves on a tree across the street) were very defined, yet a little yellowed. I could easily see the veins in the leaves, as if they were right in front of my face. It was quite fun!!! THE OVERALL LENGTH, WITH THE LENS CAP OFF IS 29.5". Most of the info I have about this item came from. CHARLES EDWIN read more
