20" German Feather Tree in Wooden Base. Early 1900s. Early turned wooden base, painted a beige color. MADE IN GERMANY marked on bottom in ink. Tree has a wooden dowel for trunk, which has been wrapped with cigar paper, Heavy wire branches clamped and wired into the trunk, then individually hand wrapped with dyed green goose feathers from the beginning of the branch to the end. The feathers being wound with tiny wire so it curls to the end. Some of the original composition berries are still intact. This is also a cottage industry. The family would purchase the bases (or make them at home), the dowels, and the wires for insertion into the wooden dowel. The pincher tool was purchased by wealthier families, and rented by poorer families. The feathers were their own, saved, dyed green, and then stripped off the quills and wound around the branches. This was done in the winter when they could not work in the fields in the area of Lauscha, Germany. Lots of hand work here. These were manufactured as early as the 1840s for the Germans as they were so environmentally conscious. They became popular in the United States, as the Germans used them as display trees in the summer for the American importers who would come to German and order ornaments for the following year.
